On Friday, January 22, we had an amazing experience! We had the opportunity of Skyping with the awesome Dan The Rocking Man all the way from Australia. The children were so excited. They got to sing songs with him. The songs they sang were: Friends of Ten, What Makes a Good Friend, and Lets Make a Pizza. He then read us a book named Fearless, which the kids loved. The kids got to ask him questiobs about Australia. This was amazing and one experience that will always be remembered!
Thursday is the day when we learn Social Studies and Science. For Science, we continued with our states of matter experiments. We made hypotheses about what would happen when we fill a balloon with nerds and put it over a bottle of Coca Cola andvwhat would happen when we filled a balloon with pop rocks and put it over a bottle of Coca Cola. The results were surprising. Besides making a mess, the reaction caused by the nerds and cola blew up the balloon but the reaction of the pop rocks was not as thrilling!
On Thursday, January 21, we were learning about goods and services and producers and consumers. I used the story, The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza, to teach them about these concepts. We then went to the cafeteria, where they got to tour the kitchen, ask questions and then make their own pizzas from scratch. They made the dough themselves. They loved this. They got to eat their very own pizza for lunch!
We had an awesone afternoon! We were mad scientists. We performed 3 mad science experiments! These experiments were all done by the children themselves with my guidance. They watched sprinkles dance in a cup of alkaseltzer and water. They watched the reaction of when they combined baking soda with green vinegar. They made mad scientist punch! This was an awesome day!
Today in Social Studies, we were discussing needs and wants. As part of the lesson, the kiddos listened to several Pigeon books by Mo Willems. They told me what the Pigeon wanted and needed from each book. They then followed me step by step and drew Pigeon. they then added the Pigeons needs and wants to their drawing. please check out some of their amazing artwork!
Today, we read the book, Tacky the Penguin in ELA. The focus today was central theme. I chose this book because I love the thought of the author. This book teaches such a valuable lesson.
Tacky is an odd bird but he is a brave bird who protects his companions. So he is also loyal. The central theme of this awesome book is everyone is unique. everyone has positive qualities and everybody has a purpose. This is something many of the kiddos today need to learn. Just because you are different does not make you a bad person or unworthy. it is often times the one who is different, who will be brave enough to do what needs to be done!
Using various colors of construction paper, thchildren created their "Tacky" penguins. There were many giggles and comments as they created these odd birds! But that was just the beginning! They loved measuring the various parts of the penguin using cubes, a nonstandard unit of measurement. We did this activity to start off the beginning of our measurement unit in Math!
